The country's leading professional body for the will writing industry claims last night's (August 9) Panorama programme supported what it has always said: that a will is one of the most important documents a person will ever write and should be carried out by a qualified, person belonging to a regulated body.
However, Brian McMillan, Director General of the Society of Will Writers (SWW), added that the programme's focus on problems experienced by a small handful of people who had asked will writers to handle their probate masked the real issues people should be addressing. More.
Regulation
The Society was present at the seminar hosted by the LSB on the 26 July. The Society supports regulation providing it is introduced for the right reasons and is proportionate to the problems that are reported to be widespread within the industry.
From all the statements being made from the Law Society, STEP and others, it does appear that much of this is anecdotal as very little factual evidence has been produced hence why the LSB, quite rightly, has taken the decision to carry out its own survey into will writers and their activities. Lincolnshire Show 2010
As you may or may not be aware the Society spends a lot of time and effort throughout the year raising public awareness of the importance of having and maintaining a current valid will.
This year is no exception, although our funds are limited (as a non-profit making organisation) we were delighted to be able to have a solid presence at this year's Lincolnshire Show. The team at head office worked extremely hard to ensure that everything was ready in time. It was also a great opportunity for some of the team to get out of the office and speak with some of the vast number of visitors who came to our stand. More.
Prime Minister warns of tough times ahead
Whatever the future holds for us all - people will still die.
It is estimated that currently in England and Wales alone over 27 million adults don't have a valid Will; dying intestate (without a Will) could bring even more financial hardship to their loved ones that a little bit of forward planning could have prevented. More.
